The Trampoline Neck Lift

Called the trampoline lift, this one-hour procedure involves making a series of pinpricks across the jaw line under the skin. A thin surgical thread (or suture) is weaved through these tiny holes, before being tied together like a shoelace tightening up loose skin around the neck and chin.

The tautening effect has been likened to the stretching of a trampoline.

Invented by Beverly Hills-based Dr Gregory Mueller, experts believe this new procedure could spell the end of the neck lift.

‘Most patients have the procedure under local anaesthesia,’ he says. ‘If you compare it to a full-on neck lift, which is an aggressive surgery with increased risks of nerve damage, numbness and blood clots, not to mention the three months needed to recuperate, this is a far more attractive option.  You have minimal incisions, the possibility of infection is low and recovery time in most cases is just a week.'

Since gaining the required Food and Drug Administration approval in 2009 in the USA, the trampoline lift has steadily grown in popularity in the U.S. — particularly in Hollywood, where a handful of famous faces are rumoured to have tried it. This technique is also now being offered in the UK by a small number of Plastic Surgeons and by our surgeon Dr. Christoffer Ingves here in Marbella.

Warning: Like all plastic surgery the trampoline lift is not risk-free. Any treatment that inserts a permanent material into the body comes with the risk of infection, ‘It’s ideal for younger patients who have noticed early drooping of the area under the jaw line, or those with excess fat who want to avoid a more costly and invasive open neck procedure.’

Perhaps this treatment could be useful for patients with good skin tone and slight sagging in the neck, but those with jowling may be better with a standard face/neck lift.

Until now, the decision to address ageing in the neck area rested on whether you could face or afford to go in for a lengthy surgical procedure.

But while the long-term ¬effectiveness of skin tightening alternatives such as the trampoline lift are open to debate, surgeons and patients alike are hailing the fact that there is at last an alternative on the market.
